Written in the form of a personal diary, the novel chronicles a year in the life of Bridget Jones, a thirty-something single working woman living in London. She writes about her career, self-image, vices, family, friends, and romantic relationships. By 2006, the book had sold over two million copies worldwide.[2] Critics have credited Fielding's novel as the "ur-text" of the contemporary chick lit movement.[3] A sequel, The Edge of Reason, was published in 1999. AwardsThe novel won the 1998 British Book of the Year,[4] and Tracie Bennett won the 2000 Audie Award for "Solo Female Narration" for her audiobook narration.[5] In 2003, the novel was listed at number 75 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.[6] Film adaptation{{Main article|Bridget Jones's Diary (film)}}A film adaptation of the novel was released in 2001. The film stars Renée Zellweger (in an Academy Award nominated role) as the eponymous heroine, Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver, and Colin Firth as Mark Darcy. It was directed by Sharon Maguire (Helen Fielding's friend who was the inspiration for Shazzer) and the screenplay was written by Fielding, Andrew Davies, and Richard Curtis. Musical adaptation{{Main article|Bridget Jones' Diary (musical)}}A musical version is currently in the works. The show is due to open in London's West End in 2012, although no date has been officially confirmed. British pop singer Lily Allen has written the score and lyrics, and Stephen Daldry will be directing, joined by his co-worker Peter Darling, who will serve as choreographer. An official cast for the production has not yet been finalised, but workshops for the show have already begun with TV actress and star of Legally Blonde the Musical, Sheridan Smith, in the title role.[7] References1. ^{{cite news | url = https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/news/the-true-story-of-bridget-jones-6158169.html | date = 13 November 2004 | accessdate = 4 August 2015 | first = Terry | last = Kirby | newspaper = The Independent | title = The true story of Bridget Jones}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.usatoday.com/life/books/news/2006-06-20-chick-lit_x.htm|last=Memmott|first=Carol|date=11 June 2006|title=Chick lit, for better or for worse, is here to stay|work=USA Today|accessdate=11 November 2008}} 3. ^{{Cite book|title=Bridget Jones's Diary: A Reader|last=Whelehan|first=Imelda|publisher=Bloomsbury Academic|year=2002|isbn=|location=|pages=|via=}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.britishbookawards.co.uk/pnbb_previouswinners.asp|last=Davidson|first=Merric|title=British Book Awards – previous winners|accessdate=11 November 2008|archivedate=11 March 2007|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070311232921/http://www.britishbookawards.co.uk/pnbb_previouswinners.asp|dead-url=yes|df=}} 5. ^{{cite-web|url=http://booksalley.com/bAMain/bAlleyAwards.php?awards=yes&nodeid=audie&awyear=2000|publisher=BooksAlley.com|title=The Audie Awards – 2000|accessdate=11 November 2008}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100_2.shtml|title=BBC – The Big Read|publisher=BBC|date=April 2003|accessdate=18 October 2012}} 7. ^{{cite web|last=Shenton|first=Mark|url=http://www.playbill.com/news/article/129268-Stage-Musical-Version-of-Bridget-Joness-Diary-Is-in-the-Works|title=Stage Musical Version of "Bridget Jones's Diary" Is in the Works|work=Playbill|date=15 May 2009|accessdate=3 August 2010|archivedate=17 October 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121017012826/http://www.playbill.com/news/article/129268-Stage-Musical-Version-of-Bridget-Joness-Diary-Is-in-the-Works|dead-url=yes}} External links{{Portalbar|United Kingdom|Novels|1990s|Comedy}}
