The 2010 census found 1,535 people in the township,[3] 1,213 of whom lived in the unincorporated portions of the township.[4] GeographyLocated in the southern part of the county, it borders the following townships:
Two incorporated villages are located in Butler Township: Castine in the southeast, and part of New Madison in the west. The unincorporated community of Otterbein lies in the township's southwest. Name and historyButler Township was established about 1820, and most likely was named after Butler County, Ohio, which had been named for General Richard Butler.[5] It is one of six Butler Townships statewide.[6] GovernmentThe township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer,[7] who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees. The current trustees are Thomas Hans, Curtis Yount, and Ryan Crawford, and the clerk is Melissa Sullenbarger.[8] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://geonames.usgs.gov|accessdate=2008-01-31|title=US Board on Geographic Names|publisher=United States Geological Survey|date=2007-10-25}} 2. ^{{cite web |url=http://factfinder2.census.gov |publisher=United States Census Bureau |accessdate=2008-01-31 |title=American FactFinder |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130911234518/http://factfinder2.census.gov/ |archivedate=2013-09-11 |df= }} 3. ^{{cite web| url=http://factfinder.census.gov/bkmk/table/1.0/en/DEC/10_SF1/G001/0600000US3903710576| title=Geographic Identifiers: 2010 Demographic Profile Data (G001): Butler township, Darke County, Ohio| publisher=U.S. Census Bureau, American Factfinder| accessdate=December 2, 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web| url=http://factfinder.census.gov/bkmk/table/1.0/en/DEC/10_SF1/G001/0700000US390371057699999| title=Geographic Identifiers: 2010 Demographic Profile Data (G001): Remainder of Butler township, Butler township, Darke County, Ohio| publisher=U.S. Census Bureau, American Factfinder| accessdate=December 2, 2015}} 5. ^{{cite book | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=U4MUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA462#v=onepage&q&f=false | title=The History of Darke County, Ohio | publisher=W.
