释义 |
Called Back is an 1883 mystery/romance novel written by Englishman Frederick John Fargus under the pseudonym Hugh Conway[1] and published in Bristol by J. W. Arrowsmith. Over 350,000 copies were sold within four years and a stage version was produced in London in 1884. The book was popular during the 1880s in Amherst, Massachusetts, a fact that has been correlated with the use of the phrase "called back" by American poet Emily Dickinson in her late life.[2] She was impressed by the book, which a friend sent her.[3] She used the title in a later letter.[4] Notes1. ^{{cite book|author=Frederick Wilse Bateson|title=The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Uak8AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA540|year=1940|publisher=CUP Archive|page=540|id=GGKEY:SQT257C7TNL}} 2. ^{{cite book|author1=Martha Nell Smith|author2=Mary Loeffelholz|title=A Companion to Emily Dickinson|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=yR1YAgAAQBAJ&pg=PT82|date=12 December 2013|publisher=Wiley|isbn=978-1-118-83602-6|page=82}} 3. ^{{cite book|author=Emily Dickinson|title=Selected letters|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=b5xaAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA315|year=1971|publisher=Belknap Press of Harvard University Press|page=315}} 4. ^{{cite book|author=Barton Levi St Armand|title=Emily Dickinson and Her Culture: The Soul's Society|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=eiU4AAAAIAAJ&pg=PA21|date=27 June 1986|publisher=CUP Archive|isbn=978-0-521-33978-0|page=21}} 3 : English novels|Works published under a pseudonym|1883 British novels |
