It was established in 1965, on which was once an area of orchards and currently provides for around 1500 students. The school has close ties with the local community and has a reputation for high academic achievement and expectations of student excellence.[2]

Campus

The school is situated in Canley Vale, a suburb in south-western Sydney. The campus is built around the main quadrangle, next to the historic bell tower. Other facilities also include a multi-purpose school hall on the western end of the school, a table tennis complex near the quadrangle and a sports field to the north-east, outside of the school. Orphan School Creek which flows behind the campus, marks the school's northern boundaries.

The school is located about 10 minutes away from Canley Vale railway station.

Student life

Canley Vale High attracts many students from outside the local area and overseas due to its multicultural environment and student welfare program.[3] A high proportion of the school's student population comes from a non-English speaking background, which includes predominately those of Cambodian, Chinese and Vietnamese heritage as well as students with Polynesian backgrounds.

Academic results

Canley Vale High School is also regarded {{by whom|date=January 2017}} as one of the best academically non-selective co-educational public high schools in the Liverpool-Fairfield area.[4] {{failed verification|date=January 2017}}

In 2016, the school was the highest ranked in HSC results for New South Wales schools with the lowest levels of socio-educational advantage.[5]

Houses

As with most Australian schools, CVHS utilises a house system. Students are allocated to a house when they enter the school according to the first letter of their surname. There are four different houses under which students compete for the Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals:

House name Colour
Bonham red|border=darkgray}} Red
Horsley yellow|border=darkgray}} Yellow
Lennox green|border=darkgray}} Green
Parkes blue|border=darkgray}} Blue

Each of the Houses (with the exception of Bonham) are named after landmarks. Parkes was named after Parkes Reserve which is located near the school. Horsely is named after Horsley Drive which was named after a 19th-century policeman. {{Citation needed|date=January 2017}} Lennox was named after Lennox Bridge which was built by convict gangs in the 19th century under the supervision of Lennox.
