The Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership is an Australian public policy organisation focusing on welfare reform. It was developed in partnership with the people of Cape York and Griffith University, and received financial support from the Australian and Queensland Governments. The Cape York Institute was established in July 2004 as an independent policy and leadership organisation. The Institute champions reform in Indigenous economic and social policies and supports the development of current and future Cape York leaders. It works closely with other organisations in the process of Welfare Reform including Cape York Partnerships, Balkanu and the Family Responsibilities Commission. It is focused on issues in Cape York but aims to have a national influence. The Institute's Director[1] and founder[2] is Noel Pearson, an Aboriginal leader and activist from the community of Hopevale.
