Casa Grande is one of six high schools in the Petaluma City Schools District. Extracurricular activitiesAcademic DecathlonCasa Grande has raised an Academic Decathlon team. The team has represented Sonoma County for the last 30 years in the decathlon's state-level competition. They won California's Division II title seven times. The team has advanced to the final competition at the national level once, where it took sixth place overall.[2] In 2017 Casa Grande's team had taken the title of 7th overall team in California Division I. United AnglersThe United anglers started in 1983 by Tom Furrer when his students argued why they were being taught about endangered species and not given a way to help solve these problems. After finding Adobe Creek in its dried up state, he and his students started what is now a growing organization dedicated to monitoring the endangered steelhead trout, a native species found in Adobe creek, the hatching, raising, and releasing of rainbow trout and chinook salmon into the Russian River, and to educate the public. In 1993, students had raised $510,000 to build a state of the art hatchery, opened in 1993. For the past 34 years, the program has been acknowledged by Jeannie Schulz, the White House, and anthropologists Jane Goodall, while also receiving multiple awards for their work. The United Anglers is a self-sustaining program, most of the program’s money is raised by the students through fundraising and donations in order to reach the $50,000 a year budget. After more than 30 years of teaching wildlife biology and assisting his students in raising rainbow trout in the student run hatcheries, Tom Furrer retired in 2011. The program, now directed by Daniel Hubacker, continues to preserve the native strain of steelhead trout.[3] JournalismThe Gaucho Gazette is Casa Grande High School newspaper.[4] Established for more than a decade as of 2012, the Gaucho Gazette won the first place 63rd Redwood Empire Excellence in Journalism prize for high school journalism in 2009.[5] The paper was named the 4th best student newspaper by the National Scholastic Press Association in 2012.[6] StaffAdministration
