Castleiney, officially Castleleiny and historically "Castlelyny" ({{lga|Caisleán Laighnigh}}),[1] is a village in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is one half of the Roman Catholic parish of Loughmore-Castleiney.[2] It is in the barony of Eliogarty.

It is approximately 5 km from Templemore and approximately 7 km from Loughmore. The village is sometimes known locally as The Washpen. There is a stone attesting to this fact erected in the village.

The village is reached from Templemore by taking the R433 road out of Templemore and turning right onto the R502 approximately one kilometre outside Templemore. One then crosses the bridge over the Dublin to Cork railway and takes the first right turn onto local road L3205, which takes one towards Castleiney village.

Sport

  • Loughmore-Castleiney GAA is the local Gaelic Athletic Association club.

Notes

Putting the barony in its historico-geographical context.

  • Barony - an old administrative division. Eliogarty - one of 14 baronies in the old county, between Ikerrin to the north (whose chief town is Roscrea), Kilnamanagh Upper to the west (whose chief town is Borrisoleigh) and Middle Third to the south (whose chief town is Cashel).
