Cattai is located 63 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district in the local government areas of The Hills Shire and City of Hawkesbury,[3] and in the federal electoral divisions of Berowra and Macquarie.[4][5] Cattai is bounded in the north-west by the Hawkesbury River and is traversed by Cattai Creek to its confluence with the river. Apart from the natural endowments of the area, one of the outstanding landmarks is the brick farmhouse known as Cad-Die, located at the junction of Cattai Creek and the Hawkesbury River. This Georgian house was built in 1821 by Thomas Arndell, with further additions being made in the 1860s. It is now listed on the Register of the National Estate.[6] DemographicsPopulationAt the 2016 Census, there were 790 people in Cattai. The median age was 41.[1] Culture and languageThe majority of people from Cattai were born in Australia (85.0%).[1] The most common responses for religion was Anglican (28.0%), followed closely by Catholicism (24.5%) and No Religion (21.1%).[1] The majority of people spoke only English at home (91.1%). The second most spoken language was Urdu (1.4%).[1] WealthCattai is an affluent suburb in the growing north-west of Sydney. The median weekly household income is A$2,318, which is 133.7% greater than the national average.[1] In 2018, Cattai had a median house sale price of A$1.9 million.[7] Over 30% of the households have an income greater than A$3,000 per week.[8] HistoryCattai was originally thought to have derived from an Aboriginal word with an unknown meaning. However, it is more likely that it was named by the First Fleet Assistant Surgeon, Thomas Arndell. He built a homestead called 'Caddie' which resides in the now named Cattai National Park.[9] Cattai has been considered a nomenclature mistake of 'Caddie'.[10] Cattai Post Office opened on 26 November 1906 and closed in 1994.[11] Cattai Public School was established in 1886, and is situated in the Hills District of Sydney, Australia.[12] Arndell Anglican College was originally established in Cattai in 1990, until it moved to its current site of Oakville in 1994.[13]Heritage listingsCattai has a number of heritage-listed sites, including:
