It is an institute for the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute was established by the government of India under the Ministry of Agriculture in 1947 and became a member of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) family in 1967. Its headquarters moved from Mandapam Camp to Cochin in 1971.
