Born in Wessington, Derbyshire, Calladine started his football career with Scunthorpe & Lindsey United before moving to Birmingham in 1930,[4] for whom he played more than 100 games in the Football League First Division.[1] He was a physically strong player with pace and a powerful shot.[4] After leaving Birmingham he played for Blackburn Rovers and Guildford City,[2] whom he helped finish as runners-up in the 1938–39 Southern League.
