It is a member school of the University of Kent Academies Trust (UKAT), joined with another secondary school, Brompton Academy. AdmissionsThere are approximately 1000 pupils currently on roll, including 240 in the mixed sixth form, and 64 teaching staff, however, the number of pupils has dropped over the last three years so the school will have around 900 pupils at the beginning of September 2010. The current Headteacher of the school is Wendy Walters as of September 2017, taking over from Mr Storey. It is situated on Rainham Road (A2), it is just inside the parish of St Augustine, Gillingham. Almost every Christmas, the school has a Christmas service in the St Augustine Church which is just across the road from the school. HistoryThe school was opened in January 1907, by Miss Constance Wakeman. The centenary was celebrated in 2006–2007 by the release of 1000 balloons and a school fete, however, there were many other smaller events all throughout the year from September 2006 to The end of June 2007. The school is very proud of its history, and photographs of all the headteachers are displayed within the school hall. As of 2017, the grammar school, as well as, Brompton Academy had merged its sixth-forms to create one big sixth-form naming it the University of Kent Academies Trust (UKAT). Academic performanceThe school has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted. In 2008, the school's Spanish Department won 'Spanish School of the Year' from the UK Spanish Embassy. The school also has an excellent GCSE and A-Level results record; in particular within its English Department, which has consistently achieved some of the best results in the country. In 2011, Year 10 pupils from the school presented their research in chemistry at the 'UK Society for Biomaterials (UKSB) Annual Conference' at the University of Greenwich, London; and in 2012, the following Year 10 students submitted a poster presentation to the UKSB conference at the University of Nottingham. In addition, many A-Level science pupils have won competitive bursaries from the Nuffield Foundation to pursue research projects during their Summer vacation. Notable former students
