It is Bavaria's smallest municipality by area and the second smallest (after Balderschwang) by population. The municipal area comprises not the lake itself but the islands of Herrenchiemsee (Herreninsel) with its Palaces, Frauenchiemsee and the uninhabited Krautinsel.
