DescriptionChoisya ternata is an evergreen shrub, growing up to {{cvt|3|m|0}} in height. Its leaves have three leaflets and are aromatic. The white flowers are scented, appearing in spring (sometimes with limited repeat flowering in autumn).[4]Distribution and habitatChoisya ternata originates from Mexico. It is drought tolerant, preferring well drained soils.[4]CultivationChoisya ternata is widely grown as an ornamental shrub in suitable climates. It tolerates temperatures down to {{cvt|-10|C}} but is severely damaged by temperatures lower than {{cvt|-15|C}}. It responds well to pruning and shaping.[4]In addition to the species, a number of cultivars are grown, including the golden-leaved C. ternata 'Lich' (usually sold under the name {{tdes|Sundance}}),[7] and the inter-specific hybrid C. 'Aztec Pearl' (C. dumosa var. arizonica × C. ternata).[8] The species and these two cultivars have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. PhytochemistryMany quinoline alkaloids have been isolated from leaves of C. ternata. C. ternata contains an alkaloid (ternanthranin), a volatile simple anthranilate, that was shown to have pain-killing effects in mice.[10] References1. ^1 2 3 {{citation |last1=Phillips |first1=Roger |last2=Rix |first2=Martyn |date=1989 |title=Shrubs |publisher=Pan Books |publication-place=London |isbn=0-330-30258-2 |page=35 |lastauthoramp=yes }} [1][2][3][4][5]2. ^1 {{Citation |last1=Radulović |first1=N.S. |last2=Miltojević |first2=A.B. |last3=McDermott |first3=M. |last4=Waldren |first4=S. |last5=Parnell |first5=J.A. |last6=Pinheiro |first6=M.M. |last7=Fernandes |first7=P.D. |last8=de Sousa Menezes |first8=F. |date=2011 |title=Identification of a new antinociceptive alkaloid isopropyl N-methylanthranilate from the essential oil of Choisya ternata Kunth. |journal=Journal of Ethnopharmacology |volume=135 |issue=3 |pages=610–619 |doi=10.1016/j.jep.2011.03.035 |lastauthoramp=yes |pmid=21420481}} 3. ^1 {{citation |title=Choisya × dewitteana 'Aztec Pearl' |website=Plant Selector |publisher=Royal Horticultural Society |url=http://apps.rhs.org.uk/plantselector/plant?plantid=425 |accessdate=2016-08-02}} 4. ^1 {{citation |title=Choisya ternata Sundance = 'Lich' (PBR) |website=Plant Selector |publisher=Royal Horticultural Society |url=http://apps.rhs.org.uk/plantselector/plant?plantid=426 |accessdate=2016-08-02}} 5. ^1 2 3 {{citation |title=Choisya ternata |work=The Plant List |url=http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/kew-2719292 |accessdate=2016-08-02}} }}{{Taxonbar|from=Q2964355}} 1 : Rutoideae |
