It served the Civic part of Newcastle's central business district, opening on 22 December 1935.[2][3] The station had the smallest signal box in the state to control the Merewether Street level crossing. The signal box closed in July 1992.[4] Civic station closed on 25 December 2014, when the Newcastle line was truncated to terminate at Hamilton.[5] Platforms & servicesCivic had two side platforms that could accommodate six carriages. At the time of its closure, it was serviced by trains from Sydney Central to Newcastle[6] and local services from Newcastle to Maitland, Muswellbrook, Scone, Telarah and Dungog.[7] Platform 1 was for services to Newcastle. Platform 2 was for services to Gosford, Sydney Central, Maitland, Telarah, Dungog, Muswellbrook & Scone. In 2007, Platform 2 was extended at its western end to allow Merewether Street level crossing to remain open while trains are stopped at the station.[8] References1. ^{{cite web |author=Bureau of Transport Statistics |url=https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/media/documents/2017/Train%20Statistics%202014.pdf |title=Train Statistics 2014 |publisher=Transport NSW |accessdate=13 July 2018}} 2. ^Civic Station NSWrail.net 3. ^Civic Railway Station Group NSW Environment & Heritage 4. ^"Signalling & Safeworking" Railway Digest September 1992 page 354 5. ^Last train leaves Newcastle station Newcastle Herald 26 December 2014 6. ^[https://web.archive.org/web/20141129021218/http://www.sydneytrains.info/timetables/pdf/Central_Coast_Newcastle.pdf Central Coast & Newcastle line timetable] NSW TrainLink 20 October 2013 7. ^[https://web.archive.org/web/20141129021222/http://www.sydneytrains.info/timetables/pdf/Hunter.pdf Hunter line timetable] NSW TrainLink 20 October 2013 8. ^[https://web.archive.org/web/20070829124215/http://www.premiers.nsw.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/B261FCAF-78B7-40F3-9D47-96755C561621/0/ProjectSummarySheetNRC.pdf Newcastle Rail Corridor Upgrade Projects] NSW Premier's Office External links
