When it was founded by Nicola Colangelo, Coastal recognized the opportunity to move into the tourism industry, but instead of investing in vehicles reliant on major national investments in roads, bridges and tourism infrastructures, Coastal developed a scheduled flying safari network capable of accessing the remotest parts of East Africa, not yet reachable by roads. After starting with a single aircraft operating between Dar es Salaam and Selous Game Reserve, Coastal has evolved into a leader of flying safaris in East Africa with a fleet of 30 aircraft and flights to 42 destinations spanning across Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda.
