The thirteen miles (19 km) from Idaho Springs to SH 5 forms about half of the Mount Evans Scenic Byway. Route descriptionThe route begins at Idaho Springs, where it heads southwest away from the center of the city and follows the Chicago Creek. After exiting the city, the route begins climbing in elevation, ultimately reaching an elevation of about 10,000 feet,[2] where it meets SH 5, at Echo Lake Park. Together with SH 5, the route to this point forms the Mount Evans Scenic Byway,[3] the highest paved road in North America. Then the route continues through Squaw Pass, along the upper end of Echo Mountain Ski Area and on to its terminus at County Route 151. Past this point, the highway is not marked by CDOT, but the rest of what is called Squaw Pass Road descends toward Evergreen. HistoryThe route was established in 1923, where it began at US 285 and traversed to Idaho Springs. The segment east of Squaw Pass was renumbered in 1954, and the route was entirely paved by 1956.[2] Major intersections{{jcttop|state=CO|county=Clear Creek|length_ref=[4]|location_ref=[4]}}{{COint|location=Idaho Springs |lspan=2 |mile=0.000 |road=13th Avenue {{Jct|state=CO|BL|70|dab1=Idaho Springs|to1=to}} |notes=Continuation beyond I-70 }}{{COint |mile=0.000 |mile2=0.119 |road={{Jct|state=CO|I|70|US|6|US|40}} |notes=Northern terminus; I-70 exit 240 }}{{COint |location=none |lspan=3 |mile=13.265 |road={{Jct|state=CO|SH|5|location1=Mount Evans|dir1=south}} |notes=Northern terminus of SH 5 }}{{COint |mile=22.488 |mspan=2 |place=Squaw Pass Summit, elevation {{convert|9790|ft}} }}{{COint |mile=none |road={{jctname|state=CO|CR|151|county1=Clear Creek|name1=Little Bear Creek Road|noshield1=no}} |notes=Continuation beyond southern terminus }}{{jctbtm}} References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dot.state.co.us/app_DTD_DataAccess/Highways/index.cfm?fuseaction=Description&route=103&begRefPt=0&endRefPt=500&Printable=true|title=Segment list for SH 103|accessdate=2007-05-12}} 2. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.mesalek.com/colo/r100-119.html#103|title=Colorado Routes 100-119|author=Salek, Matthew E.|accessdate=2010-05-09}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Driving Directions|url=http://byways.org/explore/byways/2112/directions.html|work=America's Byways|publisher=Federal Highway Administration|accessdate=5 August 2013}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://dtdapps.coloradodot.info/otis/HighwayData#/ui/1/0/criteria/103A/0/22.488|title=Highway Data Explorer, Online Transportation Information System|website=|publisher=Colorado Department of Transportation|accessdate=October 2, 2016}} External links{{Attached KML}}
