He played as an inside forward, later converting to wing half.[3] There, he joined an Irish contingent of players that included Tommy Moroney and Frank O'Farrell, who had been recruited from Cork United.[4] McGowan played 88 times for The Hammers, scoring 9 goals,[5] before moving to Southern League club Chelmsford City in 1954. After a season, he moved on to Folkestone Town of the Kent League.[3] He made three international appearances for the Republic of Ireland national football team, all games in 1949.[6] After his retirement from football, he worked at the London Electricity Board for 22 years. He died in 1994 after suffering from Parkinson's disease. His funeral took place in Canning Town and was attended by former teammate John Dick.[3] References1. ^{{cite book|title=Ireland's Greatest|first=Dean|last=Hayes|publisher=Appletree Press|year=2006|isbn=0-86281-995-4}} 2. ^{{hugman|12523|accessdate=23 November 2018}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite book|last=Hogg |first=Tony |year=2005 |title=Who's Who of West Ham United |publisher=Profile Sports Media |isbn=1-903135-50-8|page=133}} 4. ^{{Cite web |title=O’Farrell recalls his days as a happy Hammer |first=Eoghan |last=Cormican |work=Irish Examiner |date=3 July 2013 |accessdate=23 November 2018 |url= https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/ofarrell-recalls-his-days-as-a-happy-hammer-235847.html}} 5. ^{{cite book|last1=Northcutt |first1=John |last2=Marsh |first2=Steve |title=West Ham United: The Complete Record| year=2015| publisher=deCoubertin Books| isbn=978-1-909245-27-3|pages=512-513}} 6. ^{{NFT player|pid=35339}} External links
