David W. Butler High School (commonly referred to as "Butler"), established in 1997, is located in Matthews, North Carolina, USA. Butler's campus is {{convert|74|acre|m2}}.

Athletics

The mascot is the bulldog and school colors are black, red and silver.

Football

Butler's football team has won North Carolina State Championships (2009, 2010, 2012) and 9 SW4A Conference football championships (2002, 2007, 2009–2013, 2015, 2016). The football team is often highly ranked in major national polls. The Bulldogs have gone undefeated in conference 6 times and have defeated their arch-rival the Independence Patriots 11 times in the past 8 seasons, including 4-0 in the playoffs. In 2009, Butler won its first 4AA State Championship title at Carter-Finley Stadium defeating Fayetteville based Jack Britt High School 48–17. In 2010, Butler repeated as North Carolina State 4AA Champions by defeating Wake Forest-Rolesville High School 44–0 and finished the season with a 31-game winning streak. In 2012, Butler defeated Fayetteville-based Jack Britt High School 56-28 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, winning the NC 4AA state title for the 3rd time in 4 seasons. Undefeated Butler finished the 2012 season ranked # 1 in North Carolina and # 3 in the final USA Today 2012 National Super 25 Football Poll.

Wrestling

Butler's wrestling team is also successful. The team finished 4th in the NCHSAA 4-A dual team tournament during the 2007–2008 season. During the 2008–2009 season, Butler went to the 4-A dual team state finals. Butler beat Northwest Guilford in the quarter finals and then went on to wrestle Concord Robinson. Butler won the last two matches to tie, then advance over Concord Robinson. Butler went on to wrestle against Cary High School (36–0) in the finals, falling to Cary by a score of 43–13. They finished the season with a 21–4 record. Butler was not only an un-ranked team that season, they were also the first Charlotte team to make it that far since 1998.

Girls' basketball

Butler's girls' basketball team won the state championship in 2009-10, and went 30-0 the following season before a premature loss to Mallard Creek in the Class 4A Western Regional semifinals cut their chance at a repeat short. Shooting

At around 7:10 AM on October 29, 2018, an altercation between two students occurred in a main hallway known as 500, leading to one student being shot and triggering a lockdown that was lifted by 9:15 AM EDT. The victim, identified as Bobby McKeithen, was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center by helicopter, later dying of his injuries. The suspect, identified as Jatwan Cuffie, is currently in custody and charged with first-degree murder. After he shot Boddy he came into a 500 hall classroom when the lockdown was called and turned himself in minutes later. The weapon has been confiscated by law enforcement.[3][4]
