Early years and backgroundFardell was born Sydney and moved to Dubbo in 1977. She is married to a local businessman and has three adult children. Fardell was a Councillor for Dubbo City Council between 1999 and 2005. Political careerFollowing the 2004 death of independent Tony McGrane, Fardell was elected to represent Dubbo at the subsequent by-election. At the time, the by-election was seen as a test of the NSW Nationals, who had held the seat for 17 years prior to McGrane's election in 1999,[1] while Fardell presented herself as "capable of working with any party and not having to toe the party line".[2] Labor, which had not held the seat since 1959, did not field a candidate, and federal independents Peter Andren and Tony Windsor supported Fardell in her campaign.[3] In the final result, Fardell picked up 49.3% of the primary vote, with 56% on a two-party preferred basis.[4] She was returned to office in the 2007 state election, winning 41.66% of the primary vote with both major parties once again running,[5] and served as a member of parliamentary standing committees on public works and road safety.[6] Fardell was defeated at the 2011 state election by the National Party candidate, Troy Grant, a local police inspector.[7] References1. ^{{cite news | title = Nats in by-election showdown for Dubbo | last = Mitchell | first = Alex | work = The Sun-Herald | date = 14 November 2004 | page = 40 | accessdate = }} {{s-start}}{{s-par|au-nsw}}{{succession box | title=Member for Dubbo | before=Tony McGrane | after=Troy Grant | years=2004 – 2011}}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Fardell, Dawn Elizabeth}}2. ^{{cite news | url = http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Spoiling-the-party/2004/11/19/1100838228076.html | title = Spoiling the party | author = Seccombe, Mike | work = The Sydney Morning Herald | date = 20 November 2004 | page = 32 | accessdate = }} 3. ^{{cite news | title = Dubbo failure for Nats | last = Silmalis | first = Linda | work = The Sunday Telegraph | date = 21 November 2004 | page = 17 | accessdate = }} 4. ^{{cite book | last = Barry | first = Colin | publisher = New South Wales Electoral Commission | title = Legislative Assembly District of Dubbo : by-election : 20 November 2004 | date = 1 February 2005 | accessdate = }} 5. ^{{cite web | url = http://www.elections.nsw.gov.au/state_government_elections/electoral_districts/all_districts_/dubbo/results_2007/first_candidates_post | title = Post Election Night – 2007 State Election Results – State Electoral District of Dubbo | publisher = New South Wales Electoral Commission | date = 5 April 2007 | accessdate = 27 August 2007 }} 6. ^{{cite web |title=Mrs Dawn Elizabeth Fardell, MP |work=Members of Parliament |publisher=Parliament of New South Wales |url=http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/Prod/Parlment/Members.nsf/d890a06557517cedca256e700008765e/0834b5c7284dfe10ca256f16000936ec |accessdate=17 February 2007 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20121022024330/http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/Prod/Parlment/Members.nsf/d890a06557517cedca256e700008765e/0834b5c7284dfe10ca256f16000936ec |archivedate=22 October 2012 |df=dmy }} 7. ^{{cite news | url = http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2011/03/26/3174617.htm | author = Huntsdale, Justin | title = Nationals win Dubbo in state wide Coalition landslide | work = ABC News | date = 26 March 2011 | accessdate = 3 April 2011 }} 6 : Members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly|1947 births|Living people|21st-century Australian politicians|21st-century women politicians|Women members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly |
