Dhanurasana Sanskrit: धनुरासन; IAST: Dhanurāsana), Bow Pose,[1] or sometimes Urdva Chakrasana (Upward Wheel Pose) is a backbending asana in hatha yoga and modern yoga. Etymology and originsThe name comes from the Sanskrit words धनुर (Dhanura) meaning "bow",[2] and आसन (Asana) meaning "posture" or "seat".[3] The alternative name is from ऊर्ध्व (Urdhva), "upwards", and चक्र (Chakra), "wheel". Dhanurasana is described in medieval hatha yoga texts including the 15th century Hatha Yoga Pradipika, 1.25, and the 17th century Gheranda Samhita, 2.18.[4] The pose is one of the asanas used in the classical Indian dance form Bharatanatyam.[5] A similar pose named Nyubjasana, "the face-down asana", is described and illustrated in the 19th century Sritattvanidhi.{{sfn|Sjoman|1999|pp=84 and plate 19, pose 114}} DescriptionFrom a prone position, the feet are grasped to lift the legs and chest to form the shape of a bow with the body, the arms representing the bowstring.{{sfn|Iyengar|1979|pp=101-102}}{{sfn|Mehta|1990|p=94}}[6] VariationsVariations include Parsva Dhanurasana, the same pose with the body rolled onto one side.{{sfn|Iyengar|1979|pp=102-104}} Follow-up asanasCounter asanas are Halasana and Sarvangasana.[7] See also
