It has a total area of {{convert|2700.3|km2|abbr=on}}, of which {{convert|100.3|km2|abbr=on}} is land, and, {{as of|2012|lc=y}}, had a population of {{formatnum:130600}}.[1] It was known as Dongtou County ({{lang|zh-hans|洞头县}}) until 2 September 2015, when, with the approval of the State Council, it was converted to a district.
