CareerBaird was born in Greenock on 16 November 1899 to May and David Baird, head of the science department at Greenock Academy.[1][2] He studied science and medicine at the University of Glasgow, graduating with an MB, ChB in 1922 and went on to receive an MD with honours.[1] His early experiences attending births in the Glasgow slums and in the city's Royal Maternity Hospital shaped his interest in the social and economic influences on the health of women, their babies, and across generations.[2] He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1935. He moved to Aberdeen in 1936 as Regius Professor of Midwifery at the University of Aberdeen.[3] During the next three decades, his main interests were in the areas of clinical practice, service provision and health policy in reproductive health, perinatal and maternal mortality, social obstetrics, sterilisation, induced abortion, and cervical screening. With his wife Lady Matilda Deans Baird, also a physician, Sir Dugald also established the first free family planning clinic in Aberdeen. In 1951 he set up the Aberdeen Maternity and Neonatal Databank, which continues today to link all the obstetric and fertility-related events occurring to women from a defined population.[4] Sir Dugald formally retired in 1965.[5] He died on 7 November 1986. FamilyBaird and his wife had four children, two daughters and two sons. Their daughter Joyce Baird worked as a doctor specialising in diabetes at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.[6] Their son Professor David Tennent Baird, was instrumental in gaining approval for the use of RU-486 in the UK as an emergency contraceptive or 'morning after pill'.[7] Their son D. Euan Baird, retired as CEO and Chairman of the Board of Schlumberger Ltd. in 2003, after a decades-long career with them. Awards and honoursIn 1966, the Freedom of the City of Aberdeen was conferred on him and his wife for their contribution to medical science and health in the City and beyond.[5] He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Stirling in 1974.[8] The antenatal clinic at Foresterhill had been named after him in 1970.[9] The Dugald Baird Centre for Research on Women's Health at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital is named in his honour. He and his wife are commemorated by plaques at 38 Albyn Place, Aberdeen.[10][11] The Baird Family Hospital due to open in Aberdeen in 2020 is named for him, his wife, their daughter Joyce and son David, in recognition of the medical contributions they have all made in Scotland and to the profession. The hospital will offer maternity, gynaecology, breast screening and breast surgery services, as well as a neonatal unit, a centre for reproductive medicine, an operating theatre suite and teaching facilities.[12] References1. ^1 2 {{Cite web|url=http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/40060|title=Dugald Baird|website=www.oxforddnb.com|access-date=2016-11-27}} {{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Baird, Dugald}}2. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.rcpe.ac.uk/library-archives/great-divide-policy-and-practice-abortion-1960s-scotland |title=The Great Divide: The Policy and Practice of Abortion in 1960s Scotland |first=Gayle |last=Davis |publisher=Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh |accessdate=25 July 2015 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150725190718/http://www.rcpe.ac.uk/library-archives/great-divide-policy-and-practice-abortion-1960s-scotland |archivedate=25 July 2015 |df=dmy-all }} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.abdn.ac.uk/iahs/research/obsgynae/history.php |title=Academic Obstetrics and Gynaecology: History |publisher=University of Aberdeen |accessdate=16 June 2014}} 4. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.abdn.ac.uk/iahs/research/immpact/history.php |title=Academic groups: Immpact: Our work: History |publisher=University of Aberdeen |accessdate=16 June 2014}} 5. ^1 {{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2507&dat=19861111&id=KgI-AAAAIBAJ&sjid=VEkMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2788,2430356 |title=Sir Dugald Baird dies |newspaper=Glasgow Herald |location=Glasgow |date=11 November 1986 |accessdate=16 June 2014}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/obitiuary-joyce-baird-doctor-85-1-3522007|title=Obitiuary: Joyce Baird, Doctor, 85|website=www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com|access-date=2016-11-27}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.ukwhoswho.com/view/article/oupww/whoswho/U6199|title=Who's Who|website=www.ukwhoswho.com|access-date=2016-11-27}} 8. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=r45AAAAAIBAJ&sjid=3KQMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2252%2C6024746 |title=Stirling doctorate for African writer |newspaper=Glasgow Herald |location=Glasgow |date=27 April 1974 |page=3 |accessdate=25 July 2015}} 9. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=4ZRAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=C6UMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2554%2C4158206 |title=Tribute to Sir Dugald Baird |newspaper=Glasgow Herald |location=Glasgow |date=20 March 1970 |page=25 |accessdate=25 July 2015}} 10. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.med-chi.co.uk/heritage/people/sir-dugald-baird-1899-1986.html |title=Sir Dugald Baird (1899-1986) |publisher=Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society |accessdate=16 September 2014}} 11. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/Services/CommemorativePlaque/PlaqueDetail.aspx?Id=2|title=Commemorative Plaques Record Details Sir Dugald Baird (1899 - 1986)|last=|first=|date=|website=|publisher=Aberdeen City Council|accessdate=26 July 2015}} 12. ^http://www.nhsgrampian.co.uk/nhsgrampian/InvolvingYou.jsp;jsessionid=2241BE2BB445296BF5693FFC9C7B536A?pContentID=9346&p_applic=CCC&p_service=Content.show& 6 : 1899 births|1986 deaths|Alumni of the University of Glasgow|Academics of the University of Aberdeen|Health in Aberdeen|20th-century Scottish medical doctors |
