Echetlaeus (Ancient Greek: Ἐχετλαῖος) or Echetlus (Ἔχετλος) was an ancient Athenian mythical hero of the Battle of Marathon with the Persians of the Achaemenid Empire. The latter name was also the name of a hero of ancient Thebes. The hero of the AtheniansThe following tradition was current in ancient Athens after the Battle of Marathon. During the battle, a man appeared among the Athenians, who resembled a rustic, and slew many of the Persians with his plough.[1] After the battle, he disappeared. When the Athenians searched for him, they couldn't find him anywhere. When they consulted the oracle, they were commanded to worship the hero Echetlaeus, that is the hero with the echetlon, or ploughshare.[2] It was believed that he was part of the gods' intervention during the conflict, which also included the appearances of divine personages such as Athena and Herakles in the battlefield.[3] This Echetlus was depicted in the painting which represented the Battle of Marathon in the Stoa Poikile (Painted Porch), erected during the 5th century BC and located in the Ancient Agora of Athens. The hero was clearly distinguishable in this painting among the combatants in the same manner other heroes who fought at Marathon such as Callimachus, the polemarch of Athens, and Miltiades were depicted.[4] The Stoa Poikile was one of the most famous sites in ancient Athens, due to its display of war-related paintings and loot. Echetlus of ThebesIn addition, in the play Seven Against Thebes, Echetlus is the name of one of the defenders of Thebes. He is killed when the seven attacked the city.[5] References1. ^{{Cite book|title=Pausanias's Description of Greece|last=Pausanias|first=|publisher=Cambridge University Press|year=2012|isbn=9781108047272|location=Cambridge|pages=489}} 2. ^Pausanias 1.32.5 3. ^{{Cite book|title=The Battle of Marathon in Scholarship: Research, Theories and Controversies Since 1850|last=Fink|first=Dennis|publisher=McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers|year=2014|isbn=9780786479733|location=Jefferson, NC|pages=187}} 4. ^{{Cite book|title=Historical Agency and the `Great Man' in Classical Greece|last=Ferrario|first=Sarah|publisher=Cambridge University Press|year=2014|isbn=9781107037342|location=Cambridge|pages=39}} 5. ^Statius, Thebaid, 10.296 Source{{SmithDGRBM}}{{Greece-stub}}{{History-stub}}{{Mythology-stub}} 3 : Theban mythology|Battle of Marathon|Characters in Greek mythology |
