The Egyptian national handball team is the national handball team of Egypt and is controlled by the Egyptian Handball Federation.

Egypt has been considered as one of the best Handball team in Africa along with Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and mostly recently, Angola.

The Team's performance in the 90's boosted the sport's popularity in the country and attracted media and official attention, especially after scoring a huge upset against former World champions Romania in the 1995 World Men's Handball Championship held in Iceland.

Egypt also became the first non-European team to reach the World Championship semi-finals in the 2001 Men's tournament that was held in France. The Egyptians dubbed that team as the "Dream Team".

Egypt has won the second most medals at the African cup, tied with Algeria and behind Tunisia.

History

Egypt's first performance at the IHF World Championship was in 1964, where they failed to earn a point. But since they were the first African team to participate at the tournament, and the fact that non-European teams were heavily underdeveloped back then, it was considered a major achievement.

After Egypt started developing their Handball Infrastructure, Egypt finally participated again in the 1993 tournament at Sweden. They were able to win a game this time, against Czechoslovakia and were able to progress to the next round with 1 win and 2 losses. In the second round, however, despite close matches against all 3 opponents- Romania, France and Switzerland(going as far as 26-27 with Romania,) Egypt failed to progress to the next stage.

Egypt's performance at the 1995 Championship is what raised Egypt as a strong team. This time, Egypt was able to win against 3 out of 5 teams at the first round. They beat Brazil, Kuwait and a close match against Belarus. The match against Kuwait was notorious since both team played extremely defensively- the score was 10-0.

Egypt who were widely expected not to survive the knockout stage, beat former World Champions Romania. While they were beaten at the quarterfinals against Croatia, the team was highly praised back home. Handball continued to grow at Egypt and a rivalry formed between Egypt and Tunisia.

Egypt, at the 1996 Olympics, had their best performance after losing in the 5th place match.

Egypt went to the quarterfinals every time between 1995 to 2001. At 1999, where it was hosted in Egypt, they unsuccessfully failed to pass to the semifinals for the first time, after a loss against Russia.

In the 2001 IHF World Championship, Egypt beat Morocco, Portugal and Iceland, drew with Czechia and lost to Sweden. At the knockout stage, Egypt beat fellow Africans, Algeria. At the quarterfinal, where Egypt has been knocked out 3 times prior, Egypt was against Russia again. Egypt were able to have their revenge after winning the close game 21-19. Egypt then became the first non-European team to reach the World Championship semi-finals. However after losses against France and Yugoslavia(Serbia and Montenegro,) Egypt placed fourth. This was the best performance by a non-European team until it was equaled by Tunisia in 2005. It wasn't until Qatar at 2015, got the silver medal, that Egypt's record was broken. However there were multiple controversies about Qatar's Corrupted referees and that the fact that their team contains no native Qataris.

Egypt have been able to qualify to the Championships ever since, despite failing to pass the round of 16 every time. However, Egypt's performance at the 2019 IHF World Championship being the best since 2001 and Egypt hosting the tournament once again in 2021 has brought hope for a second golden generation.
