The airport was opened on April 4, 1971. The primary use of Esbjerg Airport is as a heliport for flying offshore out to the North Sea oil and gas platforms. Airlines and destinations{{Airport-dest-list| Danish Air Transport |Aberdeen[2], Stavanger Seasonal: Bornholm |Loganair |Aberdeen[3] }} The airport used to have flights to London Stansted Airport with Ryanair as well, but these have been transferred to Billund Airport. Up until 16 February 2019, flybmi operated flights from Esbjerg to Aberdeen Airport. However this was discontinued due to the airline filing for administration, citing high fuel costs, high carbon costs and the uncertainty of Brexit. Loganair has announced it will begin operating the Esbjerg Airport to Aberdeen Airport route starting from March 4th, 2019 using an Embraer 135 aircraft[4] . See also
