Futbol Club Barcelona Rugby is a Spanish rugby union club. The senior team currently plays in División de Honor, the premier level of Spanish rugby union. Formed in 1924, the club is a member of the FC Barcelona family. The club currently plays its home games at La Teixonera.

Before the Spanish Civil War, the club won the championship of Spain on three occasions and the championship of Catalonia seven times. During the 1940s and 1950s FCB was one of the strongest rugby clubs in Spain, winning a further 10 Spanish championships. In 1953 and 1954 they won the first Spanish league titles.

History

Formation

On September 21, 1924 made its official presentation the sport of the oval ball Barça, playing a friendly match in the field of San Baudilio de Llobregat, before the C.A.D.C.I., the Culé team was composed by the following players: Sabat , Cebrián, Blasco, Rossini, Duffo, Arruaga, Isart, Soler, Albaladas I, Villalonga, Albalalate II, Davalillo, Esteve, Ruiz and Fontanella. This inaugural meeting was attended by the then president and founder of the club, Mr. Joan Gamper, who was accompanied by his numerous executives. The match was won by F. C. Barcelona, with a score of 9 to 5, and was awarded the Cup donated by the manager Mr. Tusell, a person very identified with this sport.

As delegate of the section was included Francisco Baltasar Albèniz, position that was given to him by Joan Gamper who was a great admirer of the rugby and who saw in Baltasar a great Barcelona and a real pioneer of this sport in Spain. On the occasion of the Silver weddings of the club were disputed two international meetings, before the Stade Toulousain, champion of France in that season and the second was of exhibition between the quoted French ensemble and the M.S.P. of Perpignan. Both parties were played in Les Corts and, although the terrain had no grass, the French players gave great demonstrations.

Early years

In the 1925–26 season, Barcelona began a promotion in the positions of Hispanic rugby by achieving a wonderful "quince" formed by: Corominas (trainer), Blasco, Aximeno, Folch, Fuste, Carreras, Aguilar, Bori, Estapé, Fontanella, Pujalte, Rufus, Isar, Ruiz, Rues, Rossini, Baides and Miquel. Achieving the first championships in Catalonia and Spain, and chaining the highest national awards during the next five seasons.

Also in this season two international meetings were disputed: the first against Witte Devils of Perpignan, champion of the Rousillón of second category, which was defeated by 9 to 8 and being the first victory on a French team. The second, again against the Stade Toulousain, which had also conquered the championship of France and which overcame loosely the whole culé.

Rise to the top level

In 2005–06 season played in Primera Nacional, achieving the promotion to División de Honor through the purchase of USAP Barcelona's seat.[1][2]
