Sir Frederick Hindle (28 July 1877 – 23 April 1953) was a Liberal Party politician in the United Kingdom, who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Darwen constituency in Lancashire in the short 1910 parliament and from 1923 to 1924. BackgroundHindle was born in Darwen, the son of Frederick George Hindle and Helen Moulden Gillibrand. He was educated at Charterhouse School and Owens College, Manchester. He married Alys Lawrence.[1] Political careerHindle served as Mayor of Darwen from 1912–13. He was appointed an Alderman Lancashire County Council. He succeeded his father as prospective Liberal candidate for Darwen. He contested the Darwen seat at the 1918 general election against his father's nemesis, Sir John Rutherford. At that election, Rutherford was endorsed by the Coalition Government and Hindle's prospects of victory were undercut by the intervention of a Labour Party candidate. Despite these setbacks, he came within 1,000 vote of gaining the seat. Four years later at the 1922 general election, he again lost by a majority of less than 1,000 votes. He won the seat at the 1923 general election, but lost it at the 1924 general election, and did not stand for Parliament again.[2] Electoral record{{Election box begin ||title=General Election 1918: Darwen [3] }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Unionist Party (UK) |candidate = Sir John Rutherford |votes = 9,014 |percentage =40.5 |change =-10.1 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Frederick Hindle |votes = 8,031 |percentage =36.1 |change =-13.3 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = John McGurk |votes = 5,211 |percentage =23.4 |change =n/a }}{{Election box majority| |votes =983 |percentage =4.4 |change =+3.2 }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = |percentage =71.3 |change =-22.0 }}{{Election box hold with party link| |winner = Unionist Party (UK) |swing =+1.6 }}{{Election box end}}{{Election box begin | |title=General Election 1922: Darwen [4] }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Unionist Party (UK) |candidate = Frank Bernard Sanderson |votes = 12,218 |percentage =42.6 |change =+2.1 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Frederick Hindle |votes = 11,944 |percentage =41.6 |change =+5.5 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = John McGurk |votes = 4,528 |percentage =15.8 |change =-7.6 }}{{Election box majority| |votes = 274 |percentage =1.0 |change =-3.4 }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = |percentage =91.4 |change =+20.1 }}{{Election box hold with party link| |winner = Unionist Party (UK) |swing =-1.7 }}{{Election box end}}{{Election box begin | |title=General Election 1923: Darwen [5] }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Frederick Hindle |votes = 14,242 |percentage =48.8 |change =+7.2 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Unionist Party (UK) |candidate = Frank Bernard Sanderson |votes = 11,432 |percentage =39.1 |change =-3.5 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = George Thompson |votes = 3,527 |percentage =12.1 |change =-6.1 }}{{Election box majority| |votes = 2,810 |percentage =9.7 |change =10.7 }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = |percentage =90.6 |change =-0.8 }}{{Election box gain with party link| |winner = Liberal Party (UK) |loser = Unionist Party (UK) |swing =+5.4 }}{{Election box end}}{{Election box begin | |title=General Election 1924: Darwen [6]}}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Unionist Party (UK) |candidate = Sir Frank Bernard Sanderson |votes = 13,017 |percentage =43.0 |change =+3.9 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Liberal Party (UK) |candidate = Frederick Hindle |votes = 12,082 |percentage =39.9 |change =-8.9 }}{{Election box candidate with party link| |party = Labour Party (UK) |candidate = Thomas Ramsden |votes = 5,188 |percentage =17.1 |change =+5.0 }}{{Election box majority| |votes = 935 |percentage =3.1 |change =12.8 }}{{Election box turnout| |votes = |percentage =92.7 |change =+2.1 }}{{Election box gain with party link| |winner = Unionist Party (UK) |loser = Liberal Party (UK) |swing =+6.4 }}{{Election box end}} References1. ^‘HINDLE, Sir Frederick’, Who Was Who, A & C Black, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing plc, 1920–2016; online edn, Oxford University Press, 2014 ; online edn, April 2014 accessed 17 April 2016 {{s-start}}{{s-par|uk}}{{succession box2. ^‘HINDLE, Sir Frederick’, Who Was Who, A & C Black, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing plc, 1920–2016; online edn, Oxford University Press, 2014 ; online edn, April 2014 accessed 17 April 2016 3. ^British Parliamentary Election Results 1918–1949 by FWS Craig 4. ^British Parliamentary Election Results 1918–1949 by FWS Craig 5. ^British Parliamentary Election Results 1918–1949 by FWS Craig 6. ^British Parliamentary Election Results 1918–1949 by FWS Craig | title = Member of Parliament for Darwen | years = 1923–1924 | before = Sir Frank Sanderson | after = Sir Frank Sanderson }}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Hindle, Frederick}} 6 : 1877 births|1953 deaths|Liberal Party (UK) MPs for English constituencies|UK MPs 1923–24|People educated at Charterhouse School|Alumni of the Victoria University of Manchester |
