Funk is a German surname.

Origin

The ancient and distinguished surname Funk is of German origin. It is derived from the Middle High German “funke,” meaning “spark,” and was most likely originally used to denote a blacksmith. Alternatively, it may have originally been bestowed as a nickname to indicate a very lively person.[1]

As of 2014, 42.3% of all known bearers of the surname Funk were residents of the United States (frequency 1:10,857), 37.8% of Germany (1:2,697), 8.5% of Canada (1:5,519) and 4.2% of Russia (1:43,725).
