It was started in Cologne, in Nordrhein-Westfalen in western Germany, in 1969 by {{ill|Michael Werner (art dealer)|de|Michael Werner (Kunsthändler)|lt=Michael Werner}}, who had taken over the Galerie Hake there.{{r|carl|page=505}} Werner showed work by post-War German artists such as George Baselitz, Jörg Immendorff, A.R.
