In Hong Kong, geographical constituencies, as opposed to functional constituencies, are elected by all eligible voters according to geographically demarcated constituencies. There are currently 5 geographical constituencies in Hong Kong.[1]

Hong Kong

The 5 geographical constituencies consist of the following:

  • Hong Kong Island (current 6 seats)
  • Kowloon West (current 6 seats)
  • Kowloon East (current 5 seats)
  • New Territories West (current 9 seats)
  • New Territories East (current 9 seats)

On 21 January 2010, 5 pro-democracy lawmakers resigned from the Legislative Council in order to trigger a by-election in the 5 geographical constituencies. They claimed that the by-election can serve as a de facto referendum on universal suffrage and the abolish of functional constituencies. This is known as the Five Constituencies Referendum. After the "referendum", the government passed the law to ban lawmakers to resign and run for by-elections.
