He was a councillor on the Lithgow City Council from 1974 to 1999 and was the longest-serving mayor of Lithgow, for sixteen years.[2][3] Prior to entering New South Wales politics, he was previously Deputy Chair, Central West Regional Development Board, and is a former Chairman of Blayney Abattior County Council. In Parliament, he was Government Whip and was a member of both the Standing Committee on Natural Resource Management and the Standing Orders and Procedure Committee. Martin, a Catholic,[3] expressed his opposition to stem cell research in 2007 by voting against legislation allowing the practice. The bill subsequently passed.[4] On 19 October 2010, Martin announced his decision to not seek re-election for the seat of Bathurst at the 2011 state election.[5][6] References1. ^{{cite web | title =Mr Gerard Francis Martin, MP | work =Members of Parliament | publisher =Parliament of New South Wales | url =http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/Prod/Parlment/Members.nsf/d890a06557517cedca256e700008765e/b70961e15899c36d4a256760000ca9ff?OpenDocument | accessdate = 2010-02-12}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=University Council: Current Members |publisher=Charles Sturt University |url=http://www.csu.edu.au/division/vcoffice/uc/members.htm |accessdate=2007-03-02 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20060831165512/http://www.csu.edu.au/division/vcoffice/uc/members.htm |archivedate=31 August 2006 }} 3. ^{{cite web |title=Adoption Amendment (Same Sex Couples) Bill 2010 (No. 2) |work=Hansard |publisher=Parliament of New South Wales |date=2010-09-02 |url=http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/parlment/hansart.nsf/V3Key/LA20100902003 |accessdate=2010-10-21 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110331112113/http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/parlment/hansart.nsf/V3Key/LA20100902003 |archivedate=31 March 2011 |df=dmy }} 4. ^{{cite news | title =Stem cell vote passes | work = The Sydney Morning Herald | publisher =Fairfax Media | url =http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/stem-cell-vote-passes/2007/06/07/1181089203964.html?s_cid=rss_smh | date = 2007-06-06 | accessdate = 2007-06-07}} 5. ^1 {{cite news |author=Ashworth, Len |title=Gerard Martin retires: Bathurst vote wide open |work=Lithgow Mercury |publisher=Fairfax Media |url=http://www.lithgowmercury.com.au/news/local/news/general/gerard-martin-retires-bathurst-vote-wide-open/1971634.aspx?storypage=0 |date=2010-10-19 |accessdate=2010-10-21 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110706105858/http://www.lithgowmercury.com.au/news/local/news/general/gerard-martin-retires-bathurst-vote-wide-open/1971634.aspx?storypage=0 |archivedate=6 July 2011 |df=dmy }} 6. ^{{cite news | agency = AAP | title =Another NSW MP to quit politics | work = The Sydney Morning Herald | publisher =Fairfax Media | url =http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/another-nsw-mp-to-quit-politics-20101019-16r6r.html | date = 2010-10-19 | accessdate = 2010-10-21}} External links
