Its natural habitats are tropical moist lowland forests and rivers. It is threatened by habitat loss.[1] Taxonomic controversyThis "species" was named after the Indian ornithologist S. A. Hussain as Nyctibatrachus hussaini.[3] In 2001, Biju questioned the validity of this species due to lack of type specimens in the museum.[4] In 2007, some of the same authors suggested the alternative name of Nyctibatrachus karnatakaensis,[2] stating that Nyctibatrachus hussaini was invalid due to the lack of a traceable holotype, though two of the authors claiming this were responsible for the original description.[4] A holotype (more correctly a neotype) was designated and vouchered at the Zoological Survey of India in Kozhikode with the alternate name. This became the subject of considerable controversy, as problems were noted in peer-review practices and adherence to the ICZN code.[5][6][7] References1. ^1 Biju, S.D., Dutta, S. & Ravichandran, M.S. 2004.
