Gies College of Business is a business school for both undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. As of 2018, more than 4,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled on campus in Champaign, with another 1,700+ students studying online through the Gies Business iMBA and iMSA programs. Gies College of Business offers programs in accountancy, business administration, and finance.

College history

The University Senate approved the College of Commerce and Business Administration on June 9, 1914 at the request of David Kinley, a University Vice-President who would later serve as President of the University of Illinois.[2] The College was officially formed on April 27, 1915 through a vote of the University of Illinois (UI) Board of Trustees (see governance in higher education). The college began with three departments: Economics, Business Organization and Operation, and Transportation.[3]

Accountancy became its own department in 1953, and Finance followed suit in 1957. By 1965, the Accountancy Department was the largest in the nation, and three years later the first public survey of US Accounting programs ranked Illinois as #1.

The Department of Business Administration was established in 1968, and enrollment in the college grew 15 percent the next year. The College of Commerce added several more degrees and programs during the 1960s and 1970s including a Ph.D in Business Administration and the Executive MBA program.

The Hoeft Technology and Management program was introduced in 1995 as a joint degree program offered by the Colleges of Commerce and Engineering. Illinois Business Consulting was established the following year as a way to enable students to apply their academic experience to real-world business issues.

In 2003, the College of Commerce and Business Administration officially changed its name to the College of Business. Five years later, the 160,000 square foot Business Instructional Facility opened. That was the site of a major announcement 2017 when Larry Gies and his wife Beth donated $150 million to the college. It was then renamed Gies College of Business.

Since 2015, Gies College of Business has partnered with Coursera to offer a list of MOOCs, an online MBA program (iMBA), and an online MSA program (iMSA).[4][5] More than 1,700 students are enrolled in the online programs.

College naming gift

The College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign was named Gies College of Business in October 2017.[6] Chicago businessman Larry Gies (ACCY '88) and his wife Beth invested $150 million into the College in an effort to create an immediate and lasting impact for current and future students. Gies is the founder, President, and CEO of Madison Industries, a privately-held international manufacturing firm. Madison is based in Chicago, Illinois, and it builds driven, branded market leaders that are dedicated to making the world safer, healthier and more productive through innovations in filtration, medical, process improvement, energy, and safety. Scholarship support for Gies College of Business undergraduates increased by about 40 percent thanks to Gies, who wanted to ensure that talented students can attend regardless of family financial circumstances. Gift funds are also targeted to the College’s forward-thinking programs and for faculty positions and research. The College was officially named Gies College of Business by the Board of Trustees on November 18, 2017.

Campus

Gies College of Business is located in Champaign, Illinois.

Champaign

The Champaign campus is located around the intersection of Gregory Street and Sixth Street. This is the current home of Gies College of Business. When the College was first formed, however, it occupied the Commerce Building, now the East half of the Administration Building on the Main Quad.[2] The Commerce building, dedicated in 1913, was built at a cost of $100 thousand.

The College currently occupies three buildings: Wohlers Hall, Business Instructional Facility, and the Irwin Doctoral Study Hall. This area is known as the Business Quad and is considered part of the South Campus.

Wohlers Hall, formerly known as Commerce West was built in 1963.[7] Albert H. and Jane Wohlers provided a $6 million naming gift in 2000 for renovations.[8] The September 21 dedication highlighted technology-enabled classrooms, a dean's suite, a laboratory research suite, and a lecture hall.

The Business Instructional Facility (commonly referred to as "BIF"), approved by the UI Board of Trustees on July 14, 2004, stands opposite of Wohlers Hall across Sixth Street.[9] The {{convert|153900|sqft|m2|abbr=on}} building houses the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, the Undergraduate Affairs Program, and the Accountancy Program. The $62 million project, designed by architect Cesar Pelli, is LEED-certified because of its "green", environmentally friendly elements.[9][10] BIF is home to the Illinois MakerLab, the world's first 3D Printing Lab in a business school, and the [https://giesgroups.illinois.edu/marketlab/home/ Margolis Market Information Lab], which is one of the most highly utilized university finance labs in the United States.

Academic departments

Gies College of Business houses three departments: Accountancy, Business Administration, and Finance.

Accountancy

The Department of Accountancy was founded in 1953,[11] and it consistently ranks among the top two in the country. Gies College of Business offers Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, Master of Accounting Science, Master of Science in Accountancy, and PhD degrees.

The University offered courses in accounting before the creation of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign College of Business. The courses were offered through the Department of Economics from 1902 to 1915.[12] The college began the first PhD program in 1938 and has graduated more accountancy PhD candidates than any other accountancy department in the United States.[12] After the formation of the college, the accountancy program was moved into the Department of Business Organization until the Department's reorganization in the 1950s.

In 1919, H. T. Scovill helped establish the Beta Alpha Psi accounting honor society.[12] The College currently houses the Beta Alpha Psi alpha chapter.

In March 2017, the University of Illinois announced an online Master of Science in Accountancy program (iMSA)[13] in which candidates can graduate in as few as four semesters (18 months) by taking five core and three elective courses.[14]

Business Administration

The Department of Business Administration was founded in 1968 through the mergers of the Department of Industrial Administration and Marketing and the Graduate School of Business Administration.[11]

The department awards undergraduate degrees in seven majors: operations management, information systems, management, marketing, entrepreneurship, international business, and supply chain management. Along with its MBA, Gies College of Business also offered graduate degrees in international business, management, strategic brand communication, and technology management. The College also offers a PhD in business administration.

The MSTM program encompasses a set of technology management courses. Course topics include intellectual property management, managing innovation, new product development, project management, simulation and risk analysis, supply chain management, and technology strategy. Traditional business foundation and advanced courses in Accounting, Finance, Statistics, Finance and Marketing also form a large part of the MS-Tech. The program recently introduced two tracks of courses. One for recent graduates and another for experienced professionals.[15]

The University of Illinois also offers an online MBA program referred to iMBA in which candidates can take business courses provided by this institution at coursera.com in addition to six additional MBA courses directly from the university and acquire a master's in business administration degree.[16]

Finance

In 1957, the UI Board of Trustees approved the Dean's proposal to create a Department of Finance.[11] The Department currently offers a bachelor of science in finance, master of science in finance (MSF), master of science in financial engineering (MSFE), and a PhD in finance. The Department offers specializations in banking and financial institutions; corporate finance; financial engineering; investment and portfolio management; real estate and urban economics; and risk management and insurance.

The MSF program began in 1958.[17] In 2008, the CFA Institute announced the MSF program's inclusion as a CFA Program Partner. The deputy CEO of the CFA Institute, Bob Johnson, noted, "Students in this program are exposed to the Candidate Body of Knowledge, concepts and principles that have been identified by investment experts worldwide as essential to global practice".
