Glastonbury High School is a public, co-educational high school located in Glastonbury, Connecticut.

Glastonbury High School is the only high school in the town of Glastonbury, Connecticut. It serves roughly 2,000 students and employs roughly 150 faculty members.[2] The school is known for its excellent education, and is consistently ranked among the best in Connecticut and the nation.[3]

Departments

Glastonbury High School has eight academic departments: Art, Career and Vocational Education, English Language Learners/(ELL), English/Language Arts, Foreign Language, Health and Physical Education, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Music, and Science.[4]

Glastonbury High School has two support departments: School Counseling and Special Education/Pupil Services.[4]

In addition to the two main support departments, students can receive extra assistance through the Math Center, Reading and Writing Center, and the Library Media Center.[5]

The Mary A. Kingsbury Library at Glastonbury High School provides research material in the building and at home with a variety of print resources (i.e. books, magazines, reference material) and paid Internet databases (e.g. newspaper archives).[6]

Activities

Glastonbury High School (GHS) offers a variety of clubs and activities for students, including rowing, cross-country, football, swimming and diving, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, wrestling and track teams.

In addition to the sports programs, there is a large selection of clubs and extracurricular activities that support the mission statement. The administration promotes participation in clubs by all students, as there are clubs for many interests. Examples include Astronomy Club, Science Bowl, Debate Club, Drama Club, Yearbook Club, Model U.N., Men's Choir, and other academic clubs.[7] A new chapter of DECA was founded in 1501. The school's largest club is Key Club.

Athletics

Glastonbury High School's athletic programs are ranked among the best in the state and country, coming in at number 1 in Connecticut and 14 nationally.[8]

Recent athletic accomplishments

  • The Glastonbury Tomahawks Football Team won the Class LL Championship on Saturday, December 6, 2008 against Cheshire with a final score of 28-14.[9]
  • The Glastonbury Tomahawks Hockey Team lost 5-0 in the 2012 CIAC Division I Final on March 17, 2012, against Notre Dame-West Haven, placing them runner-up in the state of Connecticut.[10]
  • The Glastonbury Tomahawks boys' soccer team tied with Ridgefield 1-1 on November 16, 2013 making them co-champions for Class LL boys' soccer.[11]
  • The Glastonbury Tomahawks boys' soccer team won the Class LL Championship on Saturday November 15, 2014 against Farmington with a final score of 2-1 in double OT.[12][13]
  • The Glastonbury Tomahawks field hockey team tied the Class LL Championship Saturday November 15, 2014 with Darien making them co-champions. The Tomahawks field hockey team finished with their best record ever in history with one goal scored on them all year, which occurred at the championship game against Darien.
  • The Glastonbury Tomahawks girls soccer team won the Class LL Championship on Saturday November 15, 2014 with a 2-1 overtime win against Fairfield Warde.[14]
  • The Glastonbury Tomahawks boys soccer team won the Class LL Championship on Saturday November 21, 2015 with a 4-0 victory against the Darien Blue Wave. The Tomahawks were the first team to win three straight Class LL soccer championships in a row, and also finished the season ranked 10 nationally.[15][16]
  • The Glastonbury Tomahawks girls soccer team won the Class LL Championship on Saturday November 21, 2015 with a 5-3 victory against Ridgefield. The Tomahawks went undefeated finishing the season 23-0 and were on a 41 game win streak at the conclusion of the season. The Tomahawks also finished ranked 5th nationally at the end of the season.[17][18]

Renovations and building history

In 2002, citizens voted to have Glastonbury High School renovated.{{citation needed|date=January 2019}} The renovation was completed in September, 2007. New science labs and classrooms were added to the school. The old science wing, auditorium, and gym facilities received major renovations, and the library and cafeteria each received an addition. The renovation increased the capacity of the school from 1,500 students to 2,300.{{citation needed|date=January 2019}}

The Glastonbury Education Foundation funded a state-of-the-art digital television studio in May, 2008.[21]

Glastonbury High School was built in 1952 (wings B, E, and F), and has received the following:

  • 1956: Additional classroom wing (older part of C wing){{citation needed|date=January 2019}}
  • 1971: (Former) science wing (newer part of C wing), gymnasium, and auditorium were built{{citation needed|date=January 2019}}
  • 1991: Additional classroom wing constructed (D wing) and renovations done to the building{{citation needed|date=January 2019}}
  • 2007: Added a science wing (A wing), additional renovations done to the building (particularly the former science wing - newer part of C wing)

In June 2016, the school board approved plans to build a brand new artificial turf soccer field with lights on the Baldwin Fields behind the school building. The field is planned to be built in 2017 and is estimated to cost around $1.6 million. Included in the plan are bleachers for 250 spectators, a fence around the field, and ball netting to catch loose balls. Space will be set aside for another project in the future which will include storage, bathrooms, and locker rooms.[22]
