The Glauco-class submarine was a pair of submarines ordered by the Portuguese government, but taken over and completed for the Royal Italian Navy (Regia Marina) during the 1930s.

Design and description

The Glauco-class submarines were improved versions of the preceding {{sclass-|Squalo|submarine|4}}. They displaced {{convert|1054|t|LT|sp=us}} surfaced and {{convert|1305|t|LT|sp=us}} submerged. The submarines were {{convert|73|m|ftin|sp=us}} long, had a beam of {{convert|7.2|m|ftin|sp=us}} and a draft of {{convert|5.12|m|ftin|sp=us}}.[1]

For surface running, the boats were powered by two {{convert|1500|bhp|lk=in|0|adj=on}} diesel engines, each driving one propeller shaft. When submerged each propeller was driven by a {{convert|600|hp|0|adj=on}} electric motor. They could reach {{convert|17|kn|lk=in}} on the surface and {{convert|8|kn}} underwater. On the surface, the Glauco class had a range of {{convert|9760|nmi|lk=in}} at {{convert|8|kn}}; submerged, they had a range of {{convert|110|nmi|abbr=on}} at {{convert|3|kn}}.[2]

The boats were armed with eight internal {{convert|53.3|cm|in|1|abbr=on|sp=us}} torpedo tubes, four each in the bow and stern. They carried a total of 14 torpedoes. They were also armed with two {{convert|100|mm|in|abbr=on|0}} deck guns, one each fore and aft of the conning tower, for combat on the surface. The light anti-aircraft armament consisted of one or two {{convert|13.2|mm|in|abbr=on}} machine guns.[1]

Ships

  • Glauco
  • Otaria

Service

Both boats were built by CRDA in its Trieste shipyard. The submarines had initially been ordered in 1931, but were acquired by the Italians when Portugal cancelled the order. Both boats were launched in 1935,[1] and they saw action in the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War.[2] Glauco was badly damaged by the British destroyer HMS Wishart and scuttled by her own crew on 27 June 1941, west of Gibraltar; Otaria was surrendered to the Allies in 1943 and used for training until it was sent to the junkyard in 1948.[1]
