GMA Supershow, formerly titled as Germside and Germspesyal, is a Philippine television variety show broadcast by GMA Network. The show is the longest-running Sunday noontime variety show in Philippine television history, before rival network ABS-CBN's ASAP surpassed the record in 2015. Hosted by German Moreno, it premiered on May 7, 1978. The show concluded on January 26, 1997 with a total of 978 episodes. It was replaced by SOP in its timeslot.

Overview

It premiered on May 7, 1978 as Germside under the production outfit Program Philippines, Inc. led by Eddie Ilarde. Ilarde gave German Moreno the opportunity to become the main host of the show. Later on, when Eddie's production outfit decided to concentrate only on Student Canteen, Kahapon Lamang and Discorama, they turned over Germside to Geebees Entertainment owned by Gil Balaguer. Despite airing on Sunday mornings, Germside became the top weekend program. When the show later on moved up to the Sunday noontime slot, the show's running time kept extending to three hours and a half weekly. Thus there was a need to reformat the show to Germspesyal in 1982.

Germspesyal was such a force on Sunday noontime that other TV networks did not take the risk of putting another live entertainment show of similar format, lest it will be doomed to fail. But Balaguer, being the profitable producer that he was, put up a similar Sunday show (a taped episode) on IBC, still with Kuya Germs as host. Thus for a while it became an all-Kuya Germs affair on Sundays (live on GMA Network, taped on IBC). But the risk proved to be costly as it left viewers confused on which show should they cheer for. GMA Network decided to step in and terminated the services of Geebees Productions for conflict of interest. For a while, there was a tug-of-war that emerged between GMA Network and IBC/Geebees Productions for the services of the now-popular Kuya Germs in which he decided to stay with the TV Network that took a risk on him. Germspesyal was later on cancelled and was replaced by GMA Supershow in 1984, with Kuya Germs taking credits as host/producer.

In 1990, GMA Supershow would later have a worthy competitor in ABS-CBN's Sa Linggo nAPO Sila hosted by the APO Hiking Society. Though the competition was relatively healthy, some artists from other networks would later on switched sides while some of them would still end up promoting their movies and recordings on GMA Supershow. In 1995, the show would welcome another worthy competitor in ASAP following the transfer of APO's show to ABS-CBN's daily noontime slot and it was reformatted as 'Sang Linggo nAPO Sila. In such a short period of time, ASAP started gaining popularity, and would later on claim the top spot on Sundays. In 1996, the GMA management decided to split GMA Supershow into two: the first hour (11:00am-12:00nn) was given to the spin-off game show Super Games hosted by Kuya Germs and some of the GMA Supershow alumni; while the second half (12:00nn-2:30pm) retained the title GMA Supershow but now broadcasting as an ultra-modern musical variety show just like its competitor to make it more fast-paced and interactive. However, the experiment did not work as Super Games was cancelled after its first season. At this point, Kuya Germs already lost creative control of the show, though he would later on become a production consultant. The GMA management's decision somehow dismayed Kuya Germs but like a true soldier, he abided to the network's decision. In December of 1996, the management decided to cancel the whole show in favor of a new musical-variety show that will aim a younger, more dynamic audience. The show had a month-long farewell where past and present GMA Supershow hosts visited leading to the finale on January 26, 1997.
