It is endemic to the island of Cuba. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical swamps, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, and plantations. It is threatened by habitat loss. It was previously considered a subspecies of the grey-headed quail-dove, which is now split into the grey-fronted quail-dove (Geotrygon caniceps), endemic to Cuba, and the white-fronted quail-dove (Geotrygon leucometopia) endemic to Hispaniola.
