Gurusharan was born to Sardar Chattar Singh Gujral, an engineer of Burmah-Shell, and Sardarni Bhagwanti Kaur in Jalandhar on 13 September 1937 in British India. Her ancestral village was Dhakkam in Jhelum district (now in Punjab, Pakistan). She has four sisters and a younger brother. Mrs. Singh is known in the Sikh community of Delhi for her kirtan singing, and has also appeared on Jalandhar Radio.[2] Since her husband became Prime Minister in 2004, she has accompanied him abroad on state visits. However, the family has largely stayed out of the limelight. Their three daughters - Upinder, Daman and Amrit, have successful, non-political, careers.[3] Upinder Kaur is a professor of history at Delhi University. She has written six books, including Ancient Delhi (1999) and A History of Ancient and Early Medieval India (2008).[4] Daman Singh is a graduate of St. Stephen's College, Delhi and Institute of Rural Management, Anand, Gujarat, and author of The Last Frontier: People and Forests in Mizoram and a novel Nine by Nine.[5] Amrit Singh is a staff attorney at the ACLU.[6] References1. ^{{cite web | url=http://pmindia.nic.in/pm_manmohan.html | title=Prime Minister Manmohan Singh - PMO Profile | publisher=Prime Minister’s Office, India | date=27 May 2014 | accessdate=28 May 2014 | deadurl=yes | archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140527212158/http://pmindia.nic.in/pm_manmohan.html | archivedate=27 May 2014 | df=dmy-all }} 2. ^First Lady for all seasons 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.pmindia.nic.in/meet.htm|title=Dr. Manmohan Singh: Personal Profile|publisher=Prime Minister's Office, Government of India|accessdate=2009-04-04|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20090303150424/http://pmindia.nic.in/meet.htm|archivedate=3 March 2009|df=dmy-all}} 4. ^{{cite web |url= http://www.business-standard.com/india/storypage.php?autono=330920&chkFlg= |title= This Singh is King of History |accessdate=2009-04-04|last= Raote |first= Rrishi |coauthors= |date= 2008-10-10 |work= |publisher= Business Standard}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://specials.rediff.com/news/2009/jan/28slid1-dr-manmohan-singhs-daughter-daman-singh-turns-author.htm|title=Meet Dr. Singh's daughter|date=2009-01-28|publisher=Rediff.com|accessdate=2009-04-04}} 6. ^{{cite web |url= http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-2639327,prtpage-1.cms |title= PM's daughter puts White House in the dock|accessdate=2008-10-13 |last= Rajghatta|first= Chidanand|coauthors= |date= 2007-12-21 |work= |publisher= ToI}} External links{{Commons category}}
