Gypsy in Amber was nominated for an Edgar Award.[2] The novel was optioned for a television series in 1974 with the title Roman Grey.[3] A pilot episode was filmed but not picked up for a full series.[4] The pilot episode was aired as a TV movie entitled The Art of Crime and was poorly received.[5]Plot summaryThe story's protagonist is Romano Grey, a gypsy antique expert who is pulled into a murder investigation when one of his friends dies in an automobile accident and is posthumously accused of the murder of a girl whose body, neatly sliced into six pieces, is found at the scene of the accident. Grey reappears in Canto for a Gypsy, published in 1972. ReceptionThe Montreal Gazette gave a positive review for the work, calling it "captivating".[6] References1. ^{{cite news|title=Criminals At Large|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1971/11/28/archives/criminals-at-large.html|accessdate=8 September 2013|newspaper=NY Times|date=November 28, 1971}} {{Martin Cruz Smith novels}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Gypsy In Amber}}{{1970s-mystery-novel-stub}}2. ^{{citation|last=Wroe | first=Nicholas | newspaper=The Guardian | url=https://www.theguardian.com/books/2005/mar/26/featuresreviews.guardianreview15 | date=25 March 2005 | title=Crime Pays}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=Best Bets|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=RJUiAAAAIBAJ&sjid=1KkFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3166,4683407&dq=art-of-crime+roman+grey&hl=en|accessdate=8 September 2013|newspaper=The Sumter Daily Item|date=Dec 1, 1975}} 4. ^{{cite book|title=Television Series and Specials Scripts, 1946-1992|publisher=McFarland|isbn=0786454377|page=403|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=f9K4tLMSbJAC&pg=PA403&dq=%22Gypsy+in+Amber%22+Smith&hl=en&sa=X&ei=sBcsUqXYIuza4APdpoD4CA&ved=0CFgQ6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=%22Gypsy%20in%20Amber%22%20Smith&f=false}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=Review: The Art of Crime|url=https://movies.nytimes.com/movie/128616/Roman-Grey-The-Art-of-Crime/overview|accessdate=8 September 2013|newspaper=NY Times}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=Review: Gypsy in Amber|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=DYoxAAAAIBAJ&sjid=iaUFAAAAIBAJ&pg=1649,2739502&dq=gypsy-in-amber+smith&hl=en|accessdate=8 September 2013|newspaper=The Montreal Gazette|date=Jan 28, 1984}} 5 : 1971 American novels|American novels adapted into films|Novels by Martin Cruz Smith|Native American novels|Novels adapted into television programs |
