It is {{convert|3.1|mi|km|1}} from Chuginadak Island, separated by the Chuginadak Pass. Yunaska Island is {{convert|16|mi|km|0}} northwest of Herbert Island. Measuring {{convert|6.2|mi|km|1}} across, Herbert Island is somewhat circular in shape and is covered by the {{convert|4,200|ft|m|adj=on}} Herbert Volcano, whose {{convert|2|km|mi|adj=on}} wide caldera is one of the largest in the Aleutian Islands.
