{{Hinduism by country}}

Hinduism is a minority religion in Spain.

History

Starting in the early 20th century, Sindhis came to the British colony of Gibraltar looking for greater financial opportunity. “From there they went to Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish territories in North Africa, eventually branching out to other cities and islands[1]

Sindhi traders and shopkeepers thrived in the freeports of the Spanish Canary Islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife following the imposition of import and foreign exchange restrictions in Spain after World War-II.

They conducted a brisk trade with the North African continent from Las Palmas. When Ceuta and Melilla, were also declared as free ports, Indian businessmen set up trading houses and retail shops catering to the tourist trade

Community

There are about 50, 000 Hindus in Spain.[2]

According to an estimate, about 25,000 of Spain’s 40,000 Hindus have come from India, 5,000 are natives of Eastern Europe and Latin America and 10,000 are Spanish.There are also small communities of Hindus from Nepal (around 200) and Bangladesh (around 500).[3]

The Indian community as a percentage of a population of 40 million is again only 0.04% at perhaps 30,000.

Hindus in Mainland Spain

Spain has recognized three entities of Hinduism *[https://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/irf/2006/71409.htm IRF 2006, Spain]

Spain is home to an estimated 25,000 Hindus of Indian Diaspora as reported in Hinduism today.

Additionally some Spanish people had started following Hinduism.

There are lot of Hindu and Indian organisations in Spain.

Hinduism in Catalonia

Hinduism has 27 temples or centres in Catalonia as of 2014, 14 of which are situated in the province of Barcelona. The religion is mostly represented by Indian immigrants, though there is also a significant number of Catalan converts. Indeed, the vast majority of Hindu temples hold their services in Catalan or Spanish language.[4]{{sfn|ISOR researchers|2014|pp=98–100}} Hindus in Catalonia follow a variety of traditions of worship and thought.{{sfn|ISOR researchers|2014|p=97}}

The type of Hinduism practiced in Catalonia, as in the rest of the Western world, does not often understand in essence the forms of traditional Hinduism.Catalan Hinduism is fragmented by multiple groups. This is justified both by the basic features of Hinduism itself and by the way in which this religious tradition has been introduced in Catalonia. There is no organization in the country that collects and coordinates the different Hindu groups in Catalonia. This is because the majority of Hindu groups that have been established in Catalonia identify themselves with a specific spiritual master. The fact that different groups follow different gurus makes them often unrelated.[5]

Hinduism is practised by a minority of people in Melilla.When Melilla became a free port at the end of the 19th century, many Indians came to the city to set up trade. The Hindu Oratory on Calle Castelar is the community's religious and cultural focal point. [7]However,due to the migration for better jobs,the Hindu community now counts only 100 members.[8]

Ceuta

There is a small number of Hindus living in Ceuta.[9]

Hindu Temples in Spain

There are also about 40 Hindu temples/worship-places in Spain.[10]

In order to build the temple the Ceuta city government and the Hindu community signed an agreement last year in which the city committed to finance part of the work, estimated at approximately US$390,000. The work started around the middle of September 2006, after all required permits granted from "Consejeria de Fomento". (January 15, 2007, Hinduism Today)

Federación Hindú de España (FHE)

FHE was formed in 2017.It intends to unite Hindus,to promote and defend Hinduism. It also wants to challenge the academic misrepresentation of Hinduism and help in correcting it.FHE will also work with and advise the local, regional and national governments on Hinduism and would work to make Hindus visible in Spain.
