It has 455 inhabitants (2011) and 185 houses (2011) The name Holthees was mentioned for the first time in 1359. It is a composition of the German words hulta (wood) and hees (forest of thicket) The town was founded around a chapel; the Mariakapel. The chapel which now stands in the center of the village dates back from the 16th century.
