Extracurricular activities

The Hopatcong High School Chiefs[7] compete in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference, following a reorganization of sports leagues in Northern New Jersey by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).[8] With 394 students in grades 10-12, the school was classified by the NJSIAA for the 2015-16 school year as North I, Group I for most athletic competition purposes, which included schools with an enrollment of 187 to 490 students in that grade range.[9] Prior to the 2010 realignment, the school participated in the Sussex County Interscholastic League until the SCIL was dissolved in 2009.[10]

Hopatcong High School maintains a variety of boys' and gitls' interscholastic sports teams including cross country, soccer, cheerleading, wrestling, basketball, bowling, golf, track and field, softball, baseball and tennis.[7]

The school operates as the host school and lead agency for a joint bowling program with Mount Olive High School, under an agreement that expires at the end of the 2017-18 school year.[11] In 2014, Hopatcong and Hackettstown High School began partnering with Mount Olive High School on a co-operative boys' ice hockey team, which plays under the Mount Olive name.[12]

The boys' wrestling team won the 1997 North I Group II state sectional championship.[13]

In 2001 and 2005, the varsity football team was the North I, Group II state champions. In 2005, the team beat Sparta High School 20-14 in overtime.[14][15]
