In 1936 he won the gold medal with his partner Willi Eichhorn in the coxless pair competition. Strauß was 29 at the time he won,[1] it was also the only time he was in the Olympics. Also in 1936 Germany went on to win the Olympics that year.[2] He was killed during WWII while serving on the Eastern Front.[3] References1. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.databaseolympics.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid=STRAUHUG01 |title=Archived copy |accessdate=21 November 2007 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20070210142924/http://www.databaseolympics.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid=STRAUHUG01 |archivedate=10 February 2007 |df= }} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/08/04/sports/olympics/20080804_MEDALCOUNT_MAP.html|title=A Map of Olympic Medals - Interactive Graphic |website=Nytimes.com|accessdate=8 May 2018}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/friv/lists.cgi?id=65 |title=Olympians Who Were Killed or Missing in Action or Died as a Result of War - Olympics at Sports-Reference.com|website=Olympics at Sports-Reference.com|accessdate=8 May 2018}} External links
