He is one of the founders of Fakespace, started in 1991, and developed hardware and software for high end scientific and government virtual reality applications. Working with Mark Bolas and Eric Lorimer, the company created tools including the Boom, Push, Fs2, Pinch Gloves, Immersive Workbenches, the Rave, and a software library called VLIB. In 1998, Fakespace spun into two companies, Fakespace Systems and Fakespace Labs.[2][3] In 2006, he helped develop a very wide field of view, stereoscopic, head-mounted display called the Wide5 to be used in the virtual reality field.[4] The Wide5 weighs less than 1 kg and displays a stereo image over a field of view ~150° horizontally, ~88° vertical with a dynamic resolution that has been hardware resampled from an input signal resolution of 1600x1200 at 60 Hz;[5] the display costs around US$32,500[6] Other projects include development of fast frame rate projectors; light field displays; fast camera capture systems; and optical projects in the display and camera/image acquisition space.[7] References1. ^{{cite conference | url=http://spie.org/x648.html?product_id=798071 | title=The Engineering Reality of Virtual Reality 2009 (Proceedings Volume) | publisher=SPIE | accessdate=September 26, 2012 |editor1=McDowall, Ian E. |editor2=Dolinsky, Margaret | booktitle=Proceedings of SPIE Volume: 7238 |date=January 2009 | conference=The Engineering Reality of Virtual Reality 2009 | location=San Jose, CA}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Mcdowall, Ian}}2. ^{{cite web | title = About Fakespace | url=http://www.fakespace.com/AboutFakespace.htm | accessdate = 2007-11-08}} 3. ^{{cite web | title = Fakespace Labs About | url=http://www.fakespacelabs.com/About.html | accessdate = 2007-11-08}} 4. ^{{cite journal | url=http://www.fakespacelabs.com/papers/ieee2006.pdf | title=Environmental and Immersive Display Research at the University of Southern California | publisher=IEEE | work=IEEE VR 2006 Workshop on Emerging Display Technologies | date=2006-02-04 | accessdate=September 26, 2012 |author1=Bolas, Mark |author2=Pair, Jarrell |author3=Haynes, Kip |author4=McDowall, Ian | pages=3–4}} 5. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.worldviz.com/products/peripherals/hmds.html | title=VR Peripherals | publisher=WorldViz, LLC | work=worldviz.com web site | accessdate=September 26, 2012}} 6. ^{{cite web | url=https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&mode=form&tab=core&id=6160dc7a41ec5458d1e914ffb508d5ab | title=70--Wide5 Head Mounted Display Solicitation Number: W52H09-07-P-6027 | publisher=US Federal Business Opportunities | date=2007-09-27 | accessdate=September 26, 2012 | author=US Dept. of the Army}} 7. ^{{cite conference | last = Jones | first = Andrew |author2=Ian McDowall |author3=Hideshi Yamada |author4=Mark Bolas |author5=Paul Debevec | title = Rendering for an Interactive 360° Light Field Display | booktitle = Siggraph 2007 Proceedings | place = San Diego, California | year = 2007 | url = http://www.siggraph.org/s2007/main.php?f=attendees&p=papers&s=10 | accessdate = 2007-11-08 }} 3 : Living people|American technology chief executives|Year of birth missing (living people) |
