B. Brauer, 1906 }}Idiacanthus atlanticus (commonly known as the black dragonfish) is a barbeled dragonfish of the family Stomiidae, found circumglobally in southern subtropical and temperate oceans between latitudes 25°S and 60°E, at depths down to {{convert|2,000|m}}. The species is sexually dimorphic: females are black with six stripes; male are brown, and lack the females' canine teeth, pelvic fins and barbel. Females are believed to make a diel vertical migration from deeper than {{convert|500|m}} by day to surface waters at night, whereas males do not migrate, remaining below {{convert|1,000|m}} at all times.[2][3] Length is up to {{convert|40|cm}} for the female, but only {{convert|5|cm}} for the male. Black dragonfish are bioluminescent, but unlike most such predators, which use their light primarily to attract prey, they can see their own light. As a result, the fish can use their light to hunt. The light is nearly in the infrared and barely visible to the human eye.[4] In the larval stage, the eyes of the larvae appear as long stalks that dangle out of the body. Eventually, they retreat as the fish ages and reaches maturity.[4] References1. ^{{IUCN|assessor=Harold, A..|assessor2=Strongin, K.|assessor3=Polidoro, B|assessor4=Carpenter, K.E..|year=2015|id=21133032|taxon=Idiacanthus atlanticus|version=2013-05}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q518838}}2. ^{{cite book | first1=Tony | last1=Ayling | first2=Geoffrey J. | last2=Cox | title=Collins Guide to the Sea Fishes of New Zealand | publisher=William Collins | location=Auckland, New Zealand | date=1982 | isbn=978-0-00216-987-5}} 3. ^{{FishBase | genus=Idiacanthus | species=atlanticus | month=May | year=2006}} 4. ^1 {{cite web |last1=Creighton |first1=Jolene |title=Aliens of the Deep: The Black Dragonfish |url=http://www.fromquarkstoquasars.com/aliens-of-the-deep-the-black-dragonfish/ |publisher=From Quarks to Quasars |accessdate=19 February 2015}} 3 : Stomiidae|Taxa named by August Brauer|Fish described in 1906 |
