释义 |
Before the Second World War, a palm tree plantation was started here, known as Palmalmal Plantation (Pal Mal Mal). The area also had a Catholic Mission, headed by Father Edward Charles "Ted" Harris.[2] Wartime historyIn April 1942, 156 Australian soldiers and civilians gathered at Pal Mal Mal after fleeing Rabaul. They were rescued by MV Laurabada, which then transported them to Port Moresby. Later, the port was taken over by the Japanese, and remained in their hands until the area was liberated on 4 November 1944. The Australian Army constructed Jacquinot Bay Airfield in 1944–1945, following an amphibious landing at Jacquinot Bay.[2] References1. ^{{cite news |url=http://www.defence.gov.au/news/raafnews/EDITIONS/4805/history/story01.htm |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303205752/http://www.defence.gov.au/news/raafnews/EDITIONS/4805/history/story01.htm |title=Dakota crash premonition: Young nurse foresees own death in World War 2 tragedy |newspaper=Air Force News |author=Piper, Bob |volume=Volume 48 |issue= No. 5 |date= April 6, 2006 |accessdate=9 December 2018 |archivedate=3 March 2016}} {{PapuaNewGuinea-geo-stub}}2. ^1 2 {{cite web|title=Jacquinot Bay|url=http://www.pacificwrecks.com/provinces/png_jacquinot.html|publisher=Pacific Wrecks Incorporated|accessdate=14 February 2013}} 2 : Bays of New Britain|East New Britain Province |
