Demographics{{As of|2011}} India census,[1] Jegathala had a population of 14,383. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Jegathala has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; male literacy is 86%, and female literacy is 73%; 9% of the population are under 6 years of age. There are about 400 household in this village.Jegathala is one of the panchayat towns in Nilgiris, located at an altitude of 1,850 m above sea level. It is 7 km from Coonoor and 13 km from Ooty. Festivals:The village is known for its temple being surrounded on all four sides. The main festivals celebrated here are Hetthai Habba, Thear Habba (Chariot), Neelamariamman (Navarathri festival), and Devva Habba. Sports:This village is very famous for our Indian National Game Hockey. The village has produced a lot of national players and a couple of International players in this sport. J R Natarajan had represented Indian National Hockey Team from 1998-2002 and Ganesh has represented Indian National Junior Hockey Team. Football is another popular sport enjoyed by all age groups. Jegathala Sports Club is the founder of Hockey Association in Nilgiris starting with other clubs like Planters (Hubbathalai), Beratty, Cordite Factory, HPF, Hillgladitors and MRC. Now about 15 hockey playing club's are now registered as Hockey Nilgiris (previously as Nilgiris Hockey Association). President - Mr.Ramachandran Secretary - Mr.Ravi Treasure - Mr.Ganesh Register number 47/2014 under society act. Madras Regimental Centre:Decades and decades back when Indian Army wanted to start its Army troop in The Nilgiris District they choose Jagathala village and the nearby spot as the ideal location. Freedom fighters from Jagathala village gave away acres of land to Indian Army in a perpetual lease agreement with zero cost involved. Now, MRC is the oldest regiment in India and Jagathala villagers are proud that their own village has played a minor role by helping the Indian Army. A number of villagers have also joined Indian Army to protect the nation.
