James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Abercorn (c. 1604 – c. 1670) was a Scottish and Irish nobleman and peer. He was the eldest son of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Abercorn and Marion Boyd.

Biography

On 8 May 1617, he was created Baron Hamilton of Strabane, of County Tyrone in Ireland, with remainder to the heirs male of the body of his father. He succeeded his father as Earl of Abercorn in 1618, and his grandfather, Claud Hamilton, 1st Lord Paisley, in 1621. Since his father had entailed his Irish lands on his younger brothers, he resigned the lordship of Hamilton of Strabane to his brother Claud on 11 November 1633.{{sfn|Cokayne|1910|p=3}}

He married, c. 1632, Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Lennox. A royal license of 25 November 1632 permitted her to retain her precedence as a dowager duchess.{{sfn|Cokayne|1910|p=3}} They had three sons:

James Hamilton, Lord Paisley (c. 1635 – bef. 1670)
Col. William Hamilton (d. bef. 1670)
George Hamilton, 3rd Earl of Abercorn (c. 1636 – bef. 1683)

The Duchess Katherine died on 21 August 1637 at Paisley, and was buried "without ceremony" on 17 September.{{sfn|Cokayne|1910|p=3}}{{sfn|Cokayne|1998|p=2}} Like his mother a recusant,^[1] Abercorn was excommunicated by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1649 and ordered to leave the kingdom. He seems also to have been in hiding from his creditors at the time, being more than 400,000 merks in debt. He died c. 1670.{{sfn|Cokayne|1910|p=3}}
