Born in a noble family (szlachta) he chose an ecclesiastical career. He held several important posts at the court of Polish king Zygmunt III Waza and his wife Constance of Austria, later at the court of Władysław IV Waza. He became the bishop of Chełmno in 1636 and archbishop of Gniezno in 1639. In 1637 he was sent by king Władysław to Vienna to escort his future wife, Cecylia Renata. At that time Emperor Ferdinand of the Holy Roman Empire gave him the title of count. He died in 1641 in his palace in Łyszkowice; it was rumored that he was poisoned by the Protestants. {{S-start}}{{S-rel|ca}}{{S-bef | before=Jakub Zadzik}}{{S-ttl | title=Bishop of Chełmno | years=1636–1639}}{{S-aft | after=Kasper Działyński}}{{S-bef | before=Jan VII Wężyk}}{{S-ttl | title=Archbishop of GnieznoPrimate of Poland | years=1639–1641}}{{S-aft | after=Maciej II Łubieński}}{{End}}{{Authority control|VIAF=62603978}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Lipski, Jan}}{{Poland-noble-stub}}{{Poland-RC-bishop-stub}}{{RC-archbishop-stub}} 9 : Ecclesiastical senators of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth|Polish Counts of the Holy Roman Empire|Canons of Wrocław|Canons of Kraków|1589 births|1641 deaths|Counts of Poland|Archbishops of Gniezno|17th-century Roman Catholic archbishops |
